Sewing Tutorial – How To Line A Crochet Or Knitted Bag.

How to make an attractive double lining for a crochet or knitted bag

This is a sewing and pattern making tutorial to help you make a lining for a crochet or knitted bag which you have made all ready to line.

You will be making a double lining with an inside pocket and then fitting it into the bag.

The tutorial is easy to follow and the steps should help you if you haven’t attempted much sewing before, or have put off lining bags because you are a little unsure how to go about it.

This tutorial has been written by me – Silvi Veale – and the pictures used are mine.
The tutorial is free to download from the link below, and it would be great if you shared the link too.

However, please do not claim this tutorial as your own, or use the pictures as if they are yours.

To follow this sewing tutorial you will need:

  • 2 Different fabrics – one to display inside the bag and one to face the outside of the bag. Fabric size will depend upon size of bag, but as a rough estimate, half a meter of each fabric should be plenty.
  • Dressmaking scissors.
  • Pins.
  • Sewing needle.
  • Sewing thread to match both bag and lining material if possible (if in doubt, and the fabric is light, use white thread).
  • Sewing machine, or you may chose to sew the seams by hand.

Notes:
Using 2 different fabrics is recommended because you may wish to have a colourful fabric for the lining which you see inside the bag (fabric 1). And this will work great, but you also need a lining to face outwards which may be seen a little through the crochet pattern – in this case the more subtle the design of the outer fabric (fabric 2) the better.

Sewing:
If you don’t have access to a sewing machine and/or wish to handsew the lining, I recommend using backstitch to stitch the seams (to prevent the thread pulling and bunching the seams).
You will all need to handsew the lining to the top of the bag because machine stitching direct to crochet can damage the crochet stitches.

You will find and download the tutorial in the pdf file here:

The downloadable file contains a written tutorial with 27 pictures – one for each part of the making process.
With this in mind, you may prefer to download the pattern to read on your phone or laptop, rather than printing it out.
Or just read it online.

The pattern is, however, printable for those who like to work with a printed copy to hand for reference.

Any questions, please post them in the comments here and I would do my best to answer.
