Crafts

My name is Silvi and I guess you would call me a crafter and this is my craft blog.

ESD Crafts has been set up as a blog where you can find plenty of information about various crafts as we research them, or as we try them out.

ESD crafts is also an offshoot of the blog I share with my daughter which we call Elephant Sun Dog. It’s the place where we share items we have made, patterns we have designed, and helpful patterns and videos from other crafters too. So ‘ESD’ seemed like a natural progression for an offshoot blog where I can talk more about all sorts of crafts.

I have been interested in crafts for a long time. And over the years, I’ve tried different crafts with varying success.

I can draw and paint (I love working with acrylics mostly), but hardly ever do so nowadays.

Cross Stitch is another craft I have tried, and would like to try again at some time soon. I did find it quite relaxing, but being a rather impatient person, I did find the process a little slow….that’s my failing not cross stitch I hasten to add!

However, I do sew, but mainly with a sewing machine. And I learned some years ago how to design and cut patterns, so I have also designed some small, simple sewing patterns myself. I hope tol share some of them here with you very soon.

For me, sewing is also a lot about finding pretty material and making something unique with it.

Sewing skills are also handy for other crafts – lining a crochet bag, for instance, with a pretty cotton fabric can really finish it off nicely.

My main craft is crochet. I taught myself to crochet when my children were small, but gave it up for years. But nowadays I crochet a lot… 🙂 Everything from small coasters to large blankets and quite a lot of things in between. I run a small craft endeavour called Teddy in a Bag, so I’m always designing and making new little bags to put teddy bears inside!

I love designing and sharing crochet patterns too. I think designing a crochet pattern is a skill in itself – it involves not only a knowledge of crochet, but maths and geometry, plus being able to explain a pattern so that as many people as possible can understand it. I enjoy the challenge 🙂

What I also like to do is decoration. I love adding beads to crochet and fabric items I have made, just to give them a little somethng different.
I can spend ages finding and sorting through new beads to make a particular pattern.

I find that decoration can make the process and the outcome much more fun!

Out of the most popular crafts, I will admit that I have never been able to complete a knitting project.
My problem with knitting (I think…) is that I’m left handed and no one has ever been able to teach me how to knit left handed without dropping stitches at every opportunity!”

But never mind… there are still plenty of crafts for me to try.
And researching for this blog seems to be a great way of finding out!
