How To Make Lovely Sewing Projects with Fat Quarters

Fat Quarter Quick Makes Has So Many Great Ideas!

I am busy designing a new sewing pattern for a small bag, and it made me think about the way we can use fabric top make really unique items.

As someone who likes to sew mainly small items, I use a lot of fat quarters in my designs.

With fat quarters you can experiment with using loads of different fabrics without making yourself bankrupt!

For me, they give me ideas too. Mixing and matching for instance: it’s surprising what different colours and patterns can work together, but you might never find that out unless you experiment with small pieces of fabric.

And as someone who makes lots of crochet bags and lines them, fat quarters are often the answer, especially for children’s bags, which are small and often cry out for bright coloured fabric which you might not normally choose.

Here’s a little crochet purse I made a couple of weeks ago (It’s made using the Larksfoot Clutch pattern by Cate Newell). It needed lining, so I searched my sewing stash and there among a small pile of fat quarters, I discovered a nice piece of fabric which matched the purse.

But there are some ideas for sewing with fat quarters which I hadn’t thought of and they are all in a lovely book by Juliet Bawden and Amanda Russell.

The book is called Fat Quarter Quick Makes and it has some fantastic ideas inside.

For instance, how many of us thought of making an owl brooch with fat quarters? I know I hadn’t.

I’ve always fancied making bunting too, but never got around to it. And a festival flag…I can hardly wait to try that one!

And for someone like me, who is always in a rush to try new things, the projects in this book are ‘quick makes’. Just the idea for a relaxing and enjoyable crafting session!

Fat Quarter Quick Makes

The description of Fat Quarter Quick Makes says that it is the perfect sewing book for beginner to intermediate crafters. And I would agree. The instructions are very well explained and the accompanying photographs are clear and so helpful.

I have a growing supply of craft books, but I just had to add Fat Quarter Makes to my collection. In fact I wish I’d discovered it before!
